The atmosphere was electric, cameras were flashing and the music was loud. As the lights dimmmed, the crowd erupted as the MC announced On behalf of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, you are watching our annual show; Lights, Camera, Fashion.

This fashion show was designed to cater to High School Students entering their final year of school. This event displayed the latest fashion trends and styles for New Mexico youth, packaged together with positive anti-use messaging and a dynamic multimedia presentation. Lights, Camera, Fashion offered fun and safe alternatives to substance abuse.

As students enter their final year of high school most will be faced with many difficult decisions. One of the most serious and life threatening of these decisions involves whether or not to consume alcohol.

In New Mexico, 48.7% of high school students have made the decision to drink alcohol in the past 30 days. Nearly 30% of students reported binge drinking and 13.3% reported drinking and driving within the previous month according to a survey from the NM Department of Health.

In addition to well-documented risks of underage drinking such as accident, injury, poor judgment, and reduced inhibitions, new research indicates that alcohol is much more harmful to the teenage brain than it is to the adult brain. In light of this information, it is increasingly important to encourage our youth to protect themselves and make positive life choices.

It is also our role to lend support to initiatives that package positive messaging in a way that involves and empowers New Mexico’s young people at a time when they are faced with many life-changing decisions. Lights, Camera, Fashion offered a new energetic approach to youth prevention in our state by offering a FUN, healthy alternative!
